One of the artists that have had a major influence on my artistic work is the surrealist photographer and writer Claude Cahun. She took the infinite freedom to be anyone before this even seemed possible. Decades before the many young people who explore their gender identity and belonging through selfies and argue for fluid concepts of identity, she broke with all the conventions and developed diverse characters for herself.
Especially her earlier self-portraits showing her with a shaved head, almost looking like an alienated figure, neither female nor male, blow my mind. Their aesthetics, as well as Cahun's intentions, have had a huge impact on my artworks.
I am interested in people's self-presentation on social media platforms and in the expression of one's identity through self-portraits. Drawing inspiration from these, I paint young people exploring questions about identity, gender concepts, and sexuality.
